Some last-minute tips for writing your ICSE Mathematics Board Exam paper:
* Make sure you fill up the necessary details on any graph papers. Also mention the question number and the section it belongs to.
* For clarity, outline/highlight your answer in a box, ex. if your answer is x=2 , draw a box around it so that it is easier for the examiner to locate your answer.
* Make sure your numbers are legible. Ensure that your sevens don’t look like ones and your threes don’t look like eights, etc.*
* Do not skip steps. Write down each and every step even if you feel it is very easy.
* If you have applied a specific technique in arriving at your answer, mention the name of the method, ex. if you have applied componendo and dividendo, then write down ‘by componendo and dividendo’ next to the step in parenthesis.
* Draw clear and neat diagrams and label them. Also, ex. if AB indicates the height of the tower, then mention separately, ‘AB=height of tower’, etc.
* Read the question thoroughly. Do not be in a hurry and see what the question is asking and attempt it accordingly.
* Check your paper twice and if you have the time, check it thrice. Make sure you don’t make any silly mistakes in calculation. To make it easier to recheck your answers, make sure your rough work is done on the same page as the answer and that it is clearly written and legible for you to recheck the calculation.
* Do not jumble up the steps. If you feel your answer seems jumbled up, leave a line after each step to make it look neat and clear.
* Leave a page if you don’t know the answer and come back to the question later. Do not waste time on a question that you are unsure of and which you need time to think upon.
* Check your paper and make sure you have answered each question and sub-question. If a question has two parts mentioned in the same line, make sure that you read the question till the very end and attempt all parts. If you have left a question to attempt later, make sure you go back and complete it.

The 10th Boards are certainly important to determine your near future, but don’t get carried away in all the hype. Stay calm and work hard (smart) from Day 1, both in school and at home. Take notes, mark doubts, and approach your teachers whenever you have any questions or do not understand a concept. Study consistently and keep practising while also making time for family and friends. This year is no different from any other. The key is to remain focused.

Personally, I would suggest using that time to revise the paper as you may have made silly mistakes or overlooked a certain subquestion, etc. which you will only catch if you take the time to revise. In attempting an extra question, you may lose out on the ones you have already attempted. Quality and accuracy of the answers is more important than the quantity. Further, I have heard that now, the examiners are only supposed to check the first five (or as mentioned) questions and not the extra ones that the student has attempted. Hence, to stay on the safe side, I would suggest using your time wisely and solving the questions with a calm mind to make sure that you do not make silly mistakes or overlook any question.

to all readers who have questions similar to yours, practice is what will get you ahead in math. Keep practicing those questions, solve examples from your textbook, solve previous years’ test papers or model test papers and time yourself while solving the same… Pretty soon, you’ll be able to manage your time well and will be able to solve the paper within the time limit, with some minutes left for revising your answers.
Also, the fifteen minutes at the beginning of the exam are crucial. Use those fifteen minutes to decide which questions you will be attempting and which ones you will leave as an option. Prioritize them and decide the order in which you will attempt them, starting with the question whose answer/outline who have clear in your head and which you are confident that you’ll be able to crack easily.
Practice in this manner while solving papers at home. Before solving papers, make sure you practice solving individual questions so that your concepts are clear. If, like you say, you know the solution to the question but are merely facing a problem completing the paper, then directly start solving past papers or model test papers. Solve at least ten and rest assured, you will get a hang of the pattern and will be able to finish the question paper easily within the time limit. 🙂

I am worried please help me….I forgot and used bluegel pen to fill in the entries in the answer bookler but now I just realized that I was supposed to only use black ball point pen….what do I do? What will happen? Will they check my paper or not? Please reply please im tensed and worried now

If I were you, I would not worry. However, I am merely a student and can in no way say what actions this may cause. The tips that I suggest in my posts are merely to remind you that “precaution is better than cure.” What has been done cannot be changed but I assure you, there are negligible chances that your paper will not be checked.

Proofs are not there in our syllabus, esp. If you go through the last 10 years questions, there are no proofs asked at all, Besides the geometry questions asked are simple and not very tough to solve. The paper will have only 2 or 3 difficult problems, the rest will not be easy. 😀

I am very unconfident about questions in geometry based on proofs, i have tried many of them on my own but all time i required help of my guide and i am not able to solve it independently and all muddles up in my mind. What to do? I’m really tensed. If question comes on prooving esp. in tangents and circles, how will i face it? I want to score atleast 95 in maths

Don’t worry that much. Last year, before my exams, even I was tensed about Mathematics but I managed to score a 99 in my Board Examination. Practice solving the relevant questions from the previous years’ papers. Solve them once or twice till you understand the method and logic behind it. By practising, you will come across tricks used to solve the questions. Keep these tricks in mind. Also, proving theorems related to circles are rarely asked in exams. If you are not confident about the question during your exam, you can always leave it as an option. However, you must be thorough in all other topics. Hope this helped. I am sure you will easily be able to score a 95 in your exam. Once again, don’t worry and stay strong! Good luck! 🙂
